Planning 7th grade with Ambleside Online

And now it's time for the 7th grade plans! This was probably the easiest year to plan out of the three girls, because it is a lot of repetition from when Kailyn worked through AO Year 7. Louisa is a bit different, of course, as all our children are and I did adjust a few things because of that.

All books listed are from Ambleside Online Year 7. {My substitutions are listed in red.}

Bible - we will continue to read the OT and NT together in our Circle Time, with Fridays being the time to work through Living By the Book by Howard Hendricks.

Devotional - Amy Carmichael's Learning of God
Pursuit of God by AW Tozer
Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges

History - We are switching things up and not using Churchill for Years 7-8. This was a last minute decision by myself but I feel really good about the change. Churchill is wonderful and very detailed but very dense and I fear things will get lost in translation. ;)

A History of England by Arnold Forster
Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People
Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of Alfred the Great
William of Malmesbury's account of the Battle of Hastings
Reading The Magna Carta
In Freedom's Cause by GA Henty
History of Deeds Done by the Sea by William Tyre
The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

We will also continue a weekly entries in her Book of Centuries.

Biographies - The Life of King Alfred by Asser
Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain

Geography - The Brendan Voyage by Tim Severin
How the Heather Looks by Joan Bodger
Also will be working with Seterra map drills for 10 min/weekly.

Government and Economics - Whatever Happened to Penny Candy by Richard Maybury

Citizenship - The Life of Alexander (finishing Part 1 and starting Part 2) by Plutarch
Ourselves by Charlotte Mason

Current Events - we will do this together with Kailyn during Afternoon Circle Time

Literature - Shakespeare's The Tempest and Coriolanusi
Beowulf by Seamus Heaney
The Once and Future King by T H White
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
History of English Literature for Boys and Girls by H E Marshall
The Age of Chivalry by Thomas Bulfinch
Watership Down by Richard Adams
Chaucer for Children by Mrs. Haweis

Poetry -  as scheduled on Ambleside Online
The Oxford Book of English Verse
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
John Keats
The Grammar of Poetry by Matt Whitling

Grammar -  continuing Our Mother Tongue

Recitation - Ephesians 6, Matthew 6:1-24, Psalms 46, 121, 127
Two Shakespeare monologues (TBD)
A poem from each poet per term

Math -  We are continuing to work on Math Lessons for a Living Education (Level 6) from Masters Books. So far, I love it. We are planning to move onto the Junior High Level once this is completed.

Science -  Great Astronomers by RS Ball (only reading about three astronomers this year)
Signs and Seasons by Jay Ryan (this carries over into Years 8-9) - this has some field work in it that we will need to do.
Adventures with a Microscope by Richard Headstrom - this has microscope work we will do.
The Wonder Book of Chemistry by Jean Henri Fabre
Secrets of the Universe by Paul Fleischer - I bought the study guide from Sabbath Mood Homeschool so we can add in experiments with this.
The Life of the Spider by Jean Henri Fabre

I left off Plant Life because I will add it onto next year and The Weather Book because I plan to use it in Year 8 or 9.

Nature Study -  Autumn Across America by Edwin Way Teale (one term)
Wandering Through Winter by Edwin Way Teale
And of course, we will continue nature journaling each week.

Logic - How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler (this continues for a few years)
Fallacy Detective by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn

Art - The Story of Painting by Janson (this continues for a few years)

Artist study: Titian, John Singleton Copley and Jan Vermeer

I also have watercolor, brushdrawing, acrylic and gouache tutorials scheduled about once a week (rotating) to be further exposed to more art techniques and to practice a bit more. We might also finish up The Drawing Textbook by Bruce McIntyre, although neither of the girls appreciate it very much, I would say it has helped their drawing skills.

Foreign Language - She will continue her study of Visual Latin I. She is really just getting started and we are working on it slowly.
Spanish - I am really not sure which route to take this year. We have a few lessons left of La Clase Divertida but then I am at a loss.

Health - Relationships by Luke Gilkerson - all of the books in this series are so very helpful for this age.

Music - We will listen and study the music of Beethoven, Franz Joseph Haydn and Antonin Dvorak.
She will also continue with piano lessons. We will continue to learn one hymn each month and add in a couple of folk songs each month, too.

Year 7 is a big jump up in AO.  I am prepared for it to be a struggle. It took Kailyn about 6 weeks to settle in and not feel too overwhelmed. I plan to have a talk ahead of time about the change in workload, expectations, etc and let her know that we can always adjust things if we need to make it more manageable. I think she is ready for the challenge since she has spent all these years reading good books and giving good narrations. So, that wraps it up for 7th grade!
